Zino’s Petrels 2008 Season is Off

Zino’s Petrel Night Tour, has finish for 2008. This tour shall start again in 2009, begining of April. We have started to receive bookings for the next season, we recommend to book as soon as possible. For now we are keeping the same pricing.

Selvagens Islands – a sea bird’s paradise

Madeira Wind Birds will be present at the British Birdwacthing Fair next weekend, 15th, 16th and 17th of August 2008, by Hugo Romano and Catarina Fagundes. We will not have a stand though we will make a lecture on Saturday at 3 pm in the Lecture Marquee 1, about Selvagens Islands.

This presentation aims to be an introduction to these Portuguese Islands where in the past hunting killed an average of 20,000 Cory’s Shearwaters annually, its history and natural value and what is being done for its conservation. “Selvagens Islands - a seabirds paradise!” do not miss this on Saturday!

Montagu’s or Pallid Harrier in Madeira?

Big debate here Montagu’s or Pallid Harrier in Caniçal. Photo variation is getting big we are starting to believe in two birds instead of one.

The Pallid Harrier was firstly recorded by Ralph Hobbs (UK) on Tuesday the 24th of June but there was a bit of doubts on its identification. On Saturday I and a group of UK birdwatchers identified it as a Pallid Harrier. On the last week of April there was a report of this species, also a juvenile, in Porto Santo Island by Riccardo Del Togno from Italy.

Yesterday, Easyjet started to sell tickets for its new route between Lisbon and Madeira. Currently, the lowest offered ticket is 25.99 EUR all inclusive. This is a huge drop in price when compared to other carriers in the same route.

With affordable prices like this we expect a boost in internal tourists towards Madeira. As well combined mixed stays in Lisbon and Madeira.

Back from Selvagens Islands

Yes, we did it… A great trip to Selvagens Islands, the first of 2008 and more will follow. Five days in the sea, 24 hours in Selvagem Pequena and 24 hours in Selvagem Grande.

By the end of this week, we shall publish an online report at our Madeira Birding website. Lots of birds, great weather, lovely Atlantic bonitos, Sarda sarda and the Selvagens lizard, Tarentola bischoffi.

Next scheduled trips are by the end of June and end of July…

Monk Seal in Funchal

Today, we manage to observe a Mediterranean Monk Seal Monachus monachus for one hour in Lido, Funchal before sunset. The mammal was varying in distance from the shore between 50 to 90 meters. Resting, though sometimes it look that it was injured. All the time had its eyes closed. A Labrador Retriever tried to approach it 20 meters away and then returned to the shore, no reaction from the Monk Seal.

Madeira Birdwatching 2008 Update

A small update in this year operation regarding our birdwatching tours in Madeira Island. The day tours run all year, as for the night tours are seasonal.

Full Day Birdwatching
Always operational, runs non-stop all year, generally on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Though flexible if required by customers.

Half Day Birdwatching
Runs all year focusing on warbler and accidental vagrants. By the end of April we have been blessed by lots of vagrants.

Fauna & Flora
Good success rates for Trocaz Pigeon this year. Special time for the flora is April till July. Though runs all year varying the observed species of fauna and flora.

Zino’s Night Expedition
This year operation has started in April. The first expedition was a sucess with over 600 Zino’s Petrel calls in 60 minutes. Season for this tour ends by August 31st.

Cory’s & Manx Night Tour
Starts this June and is a beginner approach to birdwatching night expeditions. As always a great experience.

Madeira Pelagics 2008 Update

Today, we are giving out a short update in our four boat pelagics from Madeira Island. Keep in mind that this trips have the objective of sea birds observation. Madeira Wind Birds is co-ordinating all this boat trips, and all boats have the proper licensing by the Portuguese Navy. One Navegação Costeira Type 3, coastal sea operation 25 nautical miles limit and another Navegação Oceânica Type 1, oceanic sea operation no limits.

Madeira Evening Seawatching
Trip expected to run from July, though already accepting bookings. Type 3 license.

Desertas Islands Cruise
Runs all year Monday and Thursday, a great trip for birds and dolphins. You will be able to go on shore on Deserta Grande. No schedule interruptions at this time. Type 3 license.

Madeira Pelagic for Petrels and Storm-Petrels
A great success the first trip, just this April. We manage to see Zino’s Petrel on the sea, no mistakes here. Accepting bookings for the remainder 2008 trips. Expected to run five. Type 1 license.

Selvagens Expedition
2008 first trip is due in a couple of months, and already accepting bookings for second trip. Type 1 license.

Hot winds from Africa

Birdwatching in Madeira can sometimes be very unpredictable. The endemic birds in Madeira are confined to small area and habitats. Though when it comes to vagrants we never know what we are going to get.

When hot winds blow from Africa, we usually get some accidental vagrants. Now, if this winds coincide with bird migration we reached optimum birdwatching conditions. This happened again this weekend and Madeira has been inundated it thousands of migratory birds.

Keep in mind, that Madeira is 600 km off Africa’s coast and ideal conditions can only happen twice a year. Today, Tuesday we there still more birds arriving to the Islands as hot winds continue.

Pterodroma deserta split

We have been aware that a new work by Robb, M.S., Mullarney, K.M. & The Sound Approach 2008, Petrels Night and day: a Sound Approach Guide, Poole., splits Pterodroma feae deserta into Pterodroma deserta, based on vocalizations.

A recent work by Frank Zino, Manuel Biscoito and Ruth Brown; The Separation of Pterodroma madeira (Zino’s Petrel) from Pterodroma feae (Fea’s Petrel). Here they mention that more research should be done with measurements of the Fea’s Petrel that Cape Verde, to conclude if they are a split.

Now our question is “Who is the nominate species for P. deserta? Pterodroma mollis or Pterodroma feae

We added the ability to download Madeira Wind Birds contacts in vCard form, for web application v.0.6.5. vCard version is 3.0 and its link is in the Contacts and License Section. This will let users safely download our contacts to their computer address books.

vCard is a file format standard for electronic business cards. vCards are often attached to e-mail messages, but can be exchanged in other ways, such as on the World Wide Web. They can contain name and address information, phone numbers, URLs, logos, photographs, and even audio clips.

Sea Service Suspension April 18, 2008

Due to bad sea conditions, Madeira Wind Birds cancels boat service operation for Friday, April 18, 2008. All customers with bookings for this dates will be refunded with the option of postponing the scheduled boat trips for next Saturday, Sunday and Tuesday. The affected sea trips are: Swimming with Dolphins, Dolphin Watching and Evening Cruise. All services are expected to resume as scheduled on Saturday, April 19, 2008.

Since 2007, we feature feedback and comments from our customers in our Madeira Tours website. Comments are shown in their corresponding tour, and clearly separated. On recommendation we got from one of our customers, was to show all comments in one page, so users can see the general view of the company and book the right tours.

Therefore we introduced a new section in our website named Madeira Experiences, aggregating all the comments and feedback in one page, with links to the referenced tours and trips. We bet this complement will ease your booking decision.

Greater Blue-eared Glossy-Starling Debate

We recently spotted a Greater Blue-eared Glossy-Starling Lamprotornis chalybaeus in Madeira Island. There is no information in the customs services of the trade of such species.
In Caniçal where the bird has been spotted there is a harbour, but no boat came in the last six months from North Africa, all from Europe.

We would like to ear your views if the bird is an escapee or accidental.

Are records of this species in Morocco or Mauritania?

Zino’s Petrels 2008 Season is On

Zino’s Petrels are back to Madeira Island. The season is now open till August 31st. As you all now we operate Zino’s Petrel Night Expedition, so if you plan to visit Madeira this year you should try this wildlife experience. Price stays the same €60 for 4 years, inclusive of all taxes. This is a night expedition therefore you should bring warm cloths, no need for flashlights we supply them for use is the tour.

Note that recording and photography near the breeding site is not allowed. This way we never disturb the birds. Enjoy…

Recovered and Released two Madeiran Storm Petrels

This week was great. We released two birds into the wild. Two juveniles Madeiran Storm-Petrels Oceanodroma castro, one in Lugar de Baixo, last Friday, and another in Reis Magos, Caniço, today Sunday. First bird was captured in Funchal, the second in Porto Santo. We know there is a big translocation of one of the birds, but the recovery process had to be done in Madeira. Soon we will post photos and more information in Madeira Birding website.

Cory’s Shearwater Night Tours

And here is the 3rd new tour for 2008. Cory’s Shearwater Night Tours, similar to the Zino’s Petrel Night Tour, though not so exercise demanding. Instead of going to the high peaks, we will visit some breading areas around the coast of Madeira Island. This new tour will last approximately 3 hours, cost per adult €30.00. Note that this tour doesn’t require any Natural Park fee, as opposite to the Zino’s Petrel Night Tour. Bookings for this tour will start mid February. Tours operate between April and September.

Trademark dispute Ecotours

Today, our trademark dispute comes to an end, and the travel industry wins. Back in July 2007, we Wind Birds complained against a possible trademark registration. We appealed against the registration of Ecotours. At that time, we submitted a complain based on the principle that ecotours is a name not able to be registered. As all of you out there know, Ecotours refers to ecotourism tours, making it a trademark would block the development and growth of the travel industry.Trademark application for ecotours has been declined by INPI, and all future applications will be refused. This is a great Victory for all…

2008 Selvagens Trips

It is a five day boat trip to the Portuguese most remote archipelago, south of Madeira Island. There we will see the big colony of White-faced Storm-petrels Pelagodroma marina and Cory Shearwater Calonectris diomedea.

At Madeira Wind Birds inflation is something we don’t like. Smart mouth economist state that a good annual inflation is 2%. We prefer to forget all that and keep our prices the same. So for 2008 we will maintain our prices the same for all Madeira Tours, that’s 4 years without increases.

Our Full-Day tour that costs 80.00 Euros since 2004 at supposed inflation rate of 2%, should be for sale at 86.59 Euros. Though since inflation is never 2%, therefore at real inflation a full-day tour should be 88.47 Euros. Basically we are giving a 10% discount to all of our customer.

Today, we will discuss how tours get sold before time. Yearly events like Madeira New Year Fireworks or Atlantic Festival Fireworks are tours that get fully before start.This events are premium and some are calling cards and reasons to travel to Madeira Islands. For these simple reasons, tourist want to guarantee the last available seats before arrival to Madeira Islands.For New Year the tour gets full beginning of November. The Atlantic Festival stop sales by last week of May. An interesting ratio, is that the number of available seats is invertible proportional to time left to book.i.e. Fireworks in the New Year take 8 weeks to stop sales as for Atlantic Festival 2 weeks. Seats available 4 times more for the Atlantic Festival against the New Year.Regarding when people start booking, 53 weeks for the New Year in Madeira Island, as for the Atlantic Festival in Madeira 40 weeks…

After launching a 30 days survey for our Madeira Ecotours to our clients, result are here. The question was simple:“You have 24 hours to visit Madeira, what Ecotour will you choose?”.The winner was Madeira Nature Heritage Ecotour for the land operation. Sora in Madeira Island

Back in December 4th, we spotted one Sora (Porzana carolina). It was seen by Catarina Fagundes and me (Hugo Romano) at mid-day and was Madeira first record.Yesterday January 28th, we confirmed that the bird is still in Madeira Island, more precisely in Lugar de Baixo pond. The Sora looks healthy and well-fed, its stay is reaching the 2 months.This winter visitors that are still in Lugar de Baixo include: Sora, Teal, Spotted Sandpiper, Cattle Egrets, Little Egret, Mallard. Lugar de Baixo pond looks a bit dirty with surface litter, though this birds are recovering well after a long North Atlantic flight.

Fea’s Petrel bad news!

Today, Madeira Natural Park (Parque Natural da Madeira) announced bad news concerning Fea’s Petrel (Pterodroma feae) in Bugio’s colony, Desertas, Madeira Archipelago. For the last 2 years the breeding pairs announced were around 210. The Park today lowered the number to an estimate of 60 to 120 pairs, though disclosing they aren’t confirmed breeding numbers. For some time the colony of Fea’s Petrel was thought to be much bigger than the Zino’s Petrel (Pterodroma madeira) colony in Madeira Island.For us it’s sad news, this will immediately change the status of this colony in the IUCN Red List, to Critically Endangered. Moving towards Web 2.0, though keeping Web 1.0 in our hearths. Our Madeira tours sales are boosted with the Web. Today, the Web 1.0 is our prime sales channel. And first the mean of communication is the email. Since most of the Web is moving to the second generation, we want to be in the first line.

Our first move is the creation of this blog, and after comes a new website extremely intuitive and straight forward with the principles of Web 2.0.Using this approach, we shall innovate in Madeira activities and the way new tourists book Madeira excursions and Madeira boat trips, and keeping in sync with rest of Internet.
