The Committee Against Bird Slaughter (CABS)

The Committee Against Bird Slaughter (CABS, Website: www.komitee.de/en) is the English title for the German conservation organisation Komitee gegen den Vogelmord e. V., a recognised independent charity with its head office in Bonn.

Ongoing projects include a campaign against the brutal practices of stone-crush trapping in France and the equally cruel and illegal parany lime stick installations in eastern Spain. Our main effort - for which we are perhaps best known - is today concentrated on our larger scale operations in Cyprus, Malta and Italy.

If you want to know more about our work visit out our website (www.komitee.de/en) and watch the videos on our youtube channel. The name of teh channel is "Vogelschutz" - the german word for bird protection.

Wildfires in UNESCO World Heritage Site, Madeira

This has passed beyond reasonable in the "civilized World". Is true that around the World many places burn in natural fires, this is not the case.
"Authorities" state that is controlled, we believe these are wildfires. Burning from August 13 till today, perhaps tomorrow and the day after is bad for all in Madeira.

Stupidity is contagious, some locals still release fireworks and burn bushes at their farm fields. Why?

Personally, I think Madeira is ready for a Fire Sale.

What a sad day...

Today I feel like quitting on everything about Madeira and emigrate to the other side of the world... I am so sick and tired of trying to survive against corruption, envy and incompetence on this island...

Madeira is burning for 2 weeks already and now the corrupts that manage the natural areas or that call themselves conservation societies, those who allow the shooting of the protected species of Trocaz Pigeons, who received Life funds to buy boats to escorts Guinness records, who monitor the herbicide put on the devastated habitat of what was an IBA, those are now applying for money for the conservation of Zino's petrels... I will not develop more this matter as I live on an island where terror is installed and I still depend on my business to survive.

Actually that is why I feel so sad today... I have invested the best years of my life representing Madeira and Portugal in windsurfing championships and after, in putting Madeira on the birdwatchers map and now the return I get is seeing Madeira nature being destroyed and corruption taking advantage of that...

Forest Fires affect Madeira Birding

As of Friday, August 13, 2010 at 20:00Z all Birdwatching Land trips are suspended for 36 hours. All other trips are proceeding normally.
Sadly, Madeira south facing forests are burning with the fuel being Eucalyptus sp., Pinus sp and Acacia sp., all exotic to Madeira  and some relying on fire to propagate. Note that life is running normally despite all smoke and ashes in the air, we are just taking precautionary actions.

Satellite thermal scan above 220° Celsius for 20100815@1000Z,20100814@1000Z, 20100813@2000Z

Locations directly affected are: Curral das Freiras, Parque Ecologico do Funchal and Camacha.

Our main concern is the fauna, particularly Zino's Petrel population north of Curral das Feiras, the amount of smoke, ashes, carbon dioxide and possible carbon monoxide, makes the air unbreathable at 1600 meters altitude, and that could seriously affect one the rarest seabird species in the World.
